A computational introduction to quantum statistics using harmonically trapped particles
Abstract In a 1997 paper Moore and Schroeder argued that the development of student understanding of thermal physics could be enhanced by computational exercises that highlight the link between the statistical definition of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics [Am. J. Phys. 65, 26 (1997)]. I introduce examples of similar computational exercises for systems in which the quantum statistic...
متن کاملHarmonically Trapped Quantum Gases
We solve the problem of a Bose or Fermi gas in d-dimensions trapped by δ ≤ d mutually perpendicular harmonic oscillator potentials. From the grand potential we derive their thermodynamic functions (internal energy, specific heat, etc.) as well as a generalized density of states. The Bose gas exhibits Bose-Einstein condensation at a nonzero critical temperature Tc if and only if d+ δ > 2, and a ...
متن کاملHarmonically trapped jellium
We discuss the model of a D-dimensional confined electron gas in which the particles are trapped by a harmonic potential. In particular, we study the non-interacting kinetic and exchange energies of finite-size inhomogeneous systems, and compare the resulting Thomas–Fermi and Dirac coefficients with various uniform electron gas paradigms. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, the properties...
متن کاملHarmonically trapped four-boson system
Four identical spinless bosons with purely attractive two-body short-range interactions and repulsive three-body interactions under external spherically symmetric harmonic confinement are considered. The repulsive three-body potential prevents the formation of deeply bound states with molecular character. The low-energy spectrum with vanishing orbital angular momentum and positive parity for in...
متن کاملDensity profile of a harmonically trapped ideal fermi gas in arbitrary dimension.
Closed-form analytic expressions are derived for the density profile of a harmonically trapped noninteracting Fermi gas in d dimensions. Shell structure effects are included to leading order in 1/N, where N is the number of particles. These corrections to the local density approximation scale as deltan/n approximately N-alpha, where alpha=(1+1/d)/2.
